APPLE STRUDEL (with walnuts, optional)

Ingredients:

  • 6 apples, peeled, cored, sliced

  • 3/4 to 1 cup walnuts, toasted, chopped medium fine, optional
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 ounce butter, melted
  • 8 -10 strudel filo leaves
  • as needed additional butter, for between filo leaves
  • as needed additional sugar or fine cookie crumb may be used instead of sugar

Method:

Combine apples, walnuts, if using,  sugar, spices and butter. Lay out strudel leaves and butter each layer, sprinkle with sugar or cookie crumbs, between layers and repeat with 7 more layers. Add apple mixture on long side of dough, about 3 inches from edge of filo dough. Roll into a long cylinder without tearing dough. Brush outside with butter and sprinkle with sugar.  Bake at 350º F until apples are tender and crust is browned, approximately 20-25 minutes.
